Three Voices, One Heart......
She is coming to the end of the path. The golden ribbon, shimmering in the sunlight that marks the finish line now in sight. . She looks from side to side. She has no competitors; she is competing with herself, possibly the hardest person to beat. Along the way, she has had her supporters on the sidelines, her wonderful friends and family, her coach-her amazing psychologist.
She is, however, very conscious of that familiar dark figure on the opposite sideline to her supporters. His voice is so much louder than theirs. From the start, he’s made this path feel almost impossible, throwing distractions, tempting shortcuts, tormenting her - Yes it's Mr OCD! She looks back to her supporters but they are far behind. If she stops and goes to them, she’ll lose momentum, maybe not get to the end of the path.
Damn," she mutters. But this is what she’s been working towards. She knows she and she alone is the only one who can cross that finish line. The adrenaline hits, preparing her for that final sprint. This is it! Make or break. Fear is just the gate, walk through it. Take that leap of faith - the saying she relates to the most!
So she digs deep, drawing on everything she’s learned; the words spoken in therapy, the pages and pages of self-help books she’s read which have all been part of her training, preparing for this day.
And as she manages not to engage with Mr. OCD and comes to terms with the fact that he will always be there, just in the background, she knows that by not entertaining him, she takes away his power.
As the finish line gets closer and closer, she glances across and sees the figure, once so dark and prominent, slowly fading. Beside him is another figure she recognises as herself, cheering her on, shouting, “Come on, you’ve got this girl! You’ve so got this!”
With a deep breath and sheer determination, she pushes forward, crossing the finish line at last
Yes! She did it.
